The Hauss Family

Among the immigrants arriving in Philadelphia in 1765 were Jacob Hauss and Christian Hauss. They followed the trail of Dutch migration to Lincoln County.

The first mention of the name Hauss in the Lincoln records is in a deed dated January 5^th, 1770, from Samuel Wilson to Jacob Hauss. The tract conveyed to Jacob Hauss four hundred acres, and extended up the west bank of the South Fork of the Catawba River for more than a mile. It lay between the present plantations of J.M. Lackey and Thomas F. Cline. In 1773, Jacob Hauss bought three hundred acres on Leonard’s Fork.

Jacob Hauss is the ancestor of the Lincoln branch of the family. He had four sons: Christian, Anthony, Francis, and John. Christian in 1776 bought three hundred acres extending from his father’s place down the river to the Ramsey land. March 14^th, 1786, Jacob Hauss conveyed his land to Anthony, Francis, and John. The four brothers then owned by various purchases and grants a large body of valuable land lying along the west bank of the South Fork River opposite the town of Lincolnton for a couple of miles, some of which is yet owned by their descendants.

Christian Hauss sold his farm in 1811 to Daniel Hoke and moved to Ohio. His place, lately known as the Guion farm, is now owned by J.M. Lackey.

Not much is known of John Hauss, son of Jacob. The same day, 14^th March 1786, that Jacob Hauss made deeds to Anthony and Francis, he also made one to John. In 1783 a deed was made by Peter James to John Hauss. In 1793 John Hauss conveyed a tract on Leonard’s Fork to George and Martin Buff; and in 1799 John Hauss sold a tract on Leonard’s Fork to Abner Hull. The last mention of his name is in a deed made in 1811 by Christian Hauss to Henry Schenck conveying 109 acres “adjoining the lands of Anthony Hauss and the heirs of Francis Hauss, and being the lands whereon John Hauss formerly lived.”

The present Hauss family trace their descent in Lincoln County from the two brothers, Anthony and Francis, sons of Jacob hauss.

ANTHONY HAUSS

Anthony Hauss, son of Jacob, married Magdeline Shrum a daughter of Nicholas Shrum, Senior, who was among the early settlers near High Shoals. Anthony Hauss was the father of four sons: Jacob, John, Henry, and Peter; and two daughters: Elizabeth and Catherine.

III. John Hauss, son of Anthony, married Catherine, daughter of Peter Coon, Issue:

1. David Huss, son of John, married Sallie Hallman. He was a surveyor and farmer, Issue:
   1. John Anthony Huss, Clerk of Lincoln County Court;
   2. Catherine, wife of David Beam (mother of Joseph C. Beam, Dr. Lee Beam and others;
   3. Sarah, first wife of the late Henry ShellJacob Cephas, died in Atlanta;
   4. Isaac, died young;
   5. Joseph Houser Huss served in Co.E., 34^th Regiment; killed at Gettysburg
   6. Jane, wife of J.J. McGinnas;
   7. Margaret, wife of Cotesworth L. Wilson;

   9. Elias C. Huss, lives at Southside, Lincoln County; served in Junior Reserves Co., C., 71^st Regiment;

6. Margaret, married Levi Heavner.
7. Susannah, married Phillip Reep and they moved to Arkansas.
8. Mary married Joseph Houser. Issue: Henry and Lawson Houser

IV. Henry Hauss, son of Anthony, married Catherine Plonk, Issue:

1. Jacob Hauss, married Eliza, daughter of Daniel Clay and they moved to Caldwell County, N.C.;
2. Mary, and
3. Ann, first and second wives of Maxwell Mauney;
4. Elizabeth, wife of John Shell;
5. Sarah, wife of Solomon Tutherow;

V. Peter Hauss, son of Anthony, was born July 15^th, 1783, and died June 8^th, 1830. He married Lydia Houser in 1818. She was born in Pennsylvania in 1795 and died June 4^th 1886 in her 92^nd year. They are buried in the old White Church yard in Lincolnton. Issue:

1. David Hauss, married Elizabeth Clay. Children:
   1. Cephas A., member Co. G., 57^th Regiment, died March 27, 1863 of wounds received at Fredericksburg;
   2. Candace;
   3. William T. Hauss served in Co. C., 71^st Regiment, Junior Reserves;
   4. Charlie C. Hauss, lives at his father’s homestead on part of the ancestral estate;
   5. Jane, wife of Jacob Leonard;
   6. George Hauss of Conley Springs
   7. Edward;
   8. Ann, wife of Robert Shuford;
   9. Nancy, wife of O.T. Lytton;
   10. Catherine, wife of Ed Ramsey.
2. Levi Hauss, of Lincoln County, now in his eighty-third year. He married Levina Miller. Issue:
   1. James;
   2. Alice, wife of Joseph Johnston;
   3. Ida, wif of Pink Hoffman.
3. Andrew Hauss, lives near Lincolnton on the ancestral lands; he married Mary N. Ramsey; children:
4. John N. Hauss;
5. Robert D. Hauss
6. John Hauss married Matilda Sullivan; no issue.
7. Clara Ann married Ezekiel Sullivan. Issue:
8. Luther and Rufus B. Sullivan
9. Nancy married John Mullen. No issue.

12. Catherine, daughter of Anthony Hauss married John Heavner in 1814, and moved to Iowa.

FRANCIS HAUSS

Francis Hauss, son of the pioneer Jacob, married ________ Buff, and had three children; John, Susannah and Elizabeth

1. John Hauss, son of Francis, was born January 3^rd, 1797, and died August 9^th, 1845. He married Elizabeth Whisnant. She was born April 4^th, 1806, and died June 26^th They are buried in the Lutheran cemetery in Lincolnton. Issue:
   1. Andrew J. Hauss, now in his eighty-fourth year, is the oldest member of the family so far as I know. He served in Co. K, Palmetto Regiment, during the war;
   2. Franklin went to Georgia;
   3. Mary Adaline married G.L. Sullivan and moved to Caldwell County, N.C.;
   4. Susan, married John F. Miller; children: Thomas, Pinkney, William and Martin;
   5. Cephas;
   6. Martha;
   7. Marcus, died young;
   8. Eliza, wife of Henry Haynes of Greenville, S.C.;
   9. Camilla, wife of James L. Wilkie;
   10. Jane, wife of S.D. Ramsey;
   11. Adam, killed in war;
   12. Fannie, wife of E.A. Curry;
   13. Joanna, wife of L.T. Wilkie; Jane Wilkie now owns her father’s homestead on west side of the river in the lands owned by Jacob Hauss, the pioneer.
2. Susanna, daughter of Francis, married Joseph Leonhardt in 1814. Issue:
   1. Jacob killed in war;
   2. Lawrence;
   3. Franklin;
   4. Lawson;
   5. Joseph M.;
   6. Martha, wife of Cotesworth Sullivan;
   7. Mary Ann, wife of Jacob Coon;
   8. Carolina wife of Noah Kistler
   9. Emaline wife of Emanuel Houser;
   10. Rosie wife of John Dunbar
3. Elizabeth Hauss, daughter of Francis Hauss, married Alfred Moore I 1809. They moved tp Ohio and later Kentucky. Issue:
   1831. John, b. Aaron Moses  d. Joseph  e. Alfred, f. Mary Rebecca, g. Elizabeth. Mrs. Elizabeth Hause Moors died 7^th May 1831. Alfred Moore, her son now in his seventy-fifth year is living in Shelbyville, Ky.

From an old German manuscript I learn that John Henry Beisaner married Elizabeth Hass October 10^th 1798. She was the daughter of Eliza Hauss, and this may have been the name of the wife of the first Jacob Hauss. She was born October 4^th, 1769 and died July 13^th 1848. John Henry Beisaner was born in Hesse Germany May 10^th 1758 and died May 22^nd 1847. They are buried in the cemetery of Ore Bank Lutheran Church. To them were born twelve children: Susannah, Magdelene, Mary, Johm, Elizabeth, Catherine, John Henry, Sarah, Jacob, Simon, Emanual, and Moses.
